Galaxy Balloons Acquires Aspen Leaf Printing
Cleveland, Ohio-based supplier Galaxy Balloons Inc. (UPIC: GALACTIC) has acquired Aspen Leaf Printing, a balloon supplier whose leadership was preparing to retire and looking to downsize its business. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Aspen Leaf's production will be relocated from its headquarters in Caryville, Tennessee, to Galaxy Balloons' 100,000-square-foot facility in Cleveland.

"This was another opportunity to acquire a friendly competitor and increase our market share in the balloon industry," says Terry Brizz, MAS, Galaxy Balloons president. Aspen is the second acquisition in the past 90 days for Galaxy Balloons; the supplier acquired AGA Balloons in November.

"After Galaxy Balloons acquired AGA, I approached Terry about selling our business," says Larry Gunderson, Aspen Leaf president. "We feel confident that Galaxy will continue to offer the same high-quality products and service that we have striven to maintain throughout the years. We wish Terry and his team the best of luck."

Mid-Nite Snax Buys Gourmet Gems
In First Of Several Acquisitions

Mineola, New York-based supplier Mid-Nite Snax (UPIC: midnite) announced at The Expo today it has purchased Blue Springs, Missouri-based supplier Gourmet Gems (UPIC: gemmie). Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, says Craig Fraum, Snax executive vice president.

Fraum says this is the first of several acquisitions the company is planning this year. "You've got to be aggressive in this market," he says. "We're looking into a few other companies as well."

Mid-Nite Snax will move the company operations to its New York office, but Gourmet Gems' website and toll-free phone number will remain the same. "We felt it was a good opportunity," adds Fraum. "With this type of economy, it's important to take companies that are smaller and grow them up."

Carville Kicks Off PPAI Expo With High-Energy Outlook
Whether you agree or disagree with James Carville, just about everyone in yesterday's Opening General Session would concur that the man is indeed fascinating.

Judging from the nearly full ballroom of PPAI Expo attendees who got out of bed before dawn to hear his presentation at 7:30 am, Carville's reputation for razor-sharp assessments and straight-talking common sense brought hundreds who sought to hear his candid, off-the-cuff comments-and they got plenty.

Simon Bailey Delivers Brilliant Message In Tuesday Luncheon
Tuesday's keynote luncheon started out brilliantly as speaker Simon T. Bailey asked the audience to turn to their neighbor and say, "You look marvelous." He then led the sold-out crowd in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday" for PPAI chair Sherri Lennarson, MAS.

It was an apropos beginning to Bailey's interactive talk, "Release Your Brilliance: The Four Steps To Transforming Your Life And Revealing Your Genius To The World." Brilliance, described by Bailey as a process-a marathon, not a sprint, "is a creative energy or a creative spark, that flows from the inside out."

McKain Compelled Audience
To See Dollars In Distinction

Scott McKain, author of Collapse of Distinction and keynote speaker at yesterday's packed Opening General Session of The PPAI Expo in Las Vegas, challenged his audience to create an experience so compelling that their clients can't afford to go anywhere else.

Using humor, multi-media and personal stories, McKain emphasized the importance of creating a distinction about your company that ensures your clients buy from you. He used the examples of Apple Computers, Starbucks and Evian.

"While Apple has only seven percent of the total computer market, it has 90 percent of the laptop market over $1,000," he said. "It is a category of one!"

Darel Cook, PPAI director of expositions, makes an appearance on The Industry Show to talk about brand.

what would you do?
this month's ppb

A distributor asks: "I'm looking for ways to increase the professionalism of my distributor company and am thinking about looking into the Certified Advertising Specialist (CAS) certification. Does certification make any difference to my clients? Is it reasonable to expect that I might land more projects because of it? And, is it worth it?"

What's your answer? E-mail answers along with your name, title and company name to Question@ppai.org by January 22 for possible inclusion in the March issue of PPB magazine.

Answers to this month's question are in. Click here to read advice on how to deal with a competitor who is calling on your clients.

Natural Born Leaders
PPAI's Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to select PPAI members who consistently contribute their skills and expertise toward the betterment of the Association through either volunteer service or leadership. This year, the award goes to two men, Christopher Duffy, MAS, and Mike Burns, CAS, each with strong reputations as professionals, leaders and visionaries.

Suitable Companions
Tradeshows. Uniforms. Golf events. Coordinating apparel is a good fit in more ways than you might think. If you're already selling men's or ladies' apparel to your clients, why not offer up the companion style?

Incentives Power Booster
Companies' budgets have shrunk in the past year and will likely increase only moderately in 2010. Your clients are still placing orders, but perhaps for fewer items, or lower-priced products. There's a way, however, to regain this lost business and even increase your sales during these tough economic times--with the use of incentive programs.
