Crystal D President To Serve On Recognition Council
Chuck Dahlgren, president of St. Paul, Minnesota-based supplier Crystal D (UPIC: CRYSTALD) has been elected to the board of the Recognition Council for the Incentive Marketing Association (IMA). Dahlgren, a Certified Recognition Professional (CRP), will serve for two years.

The Recognition Council provides an awareness of how recognition and rewards are part of an effective strategy for achieving better business performance. Dahlgren says he is honored to be part of an organization that believes in employee recognition as much as he does.

"Today we are faced with the challenge of a down economy," he says.

"Organizations can use this to rationalize an increase in turnover and lack of employee motivation or they can find solutions, and one of those solutions is employee recognition. I look forward to helping organizations throughout the world learn about the power of recognition and become more successful."

Healthcare Reform Closer To President's Desk
The U.S. Senate passed its version of healthcare reform, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, late on December 24. The bill went through considerable modifications to bring conservative Democrats on board, according to news reports after the vote.

The item considered most vital to the promotional products industry still remains on the table: the language of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which includes a requirement that "manufacturers" (e.g. pharmaceutical companies) report transfers of value to covered recipients (e.g. physicians). Anything valued at less than $10 must be reported once an annual aggregate of $100 is met.

Senators and representatives meet in January to hammer out the details of a final bill to send to the President.

Look for an action alert from PPAI next week that will direct industry members to PPAI's legislative action website, PPAI LAW, which provides resources for contacting legislators to discuss this part of the legislation that could have a significant impact on promotional products business.

UMAPP Member Travels To D.C.
David Hawes, CAS, a member of Upper Midwest Association of Promotional Professionals (UMAPP) and a Minnesota-based brand architect for Lewiston, Maine-based distributor Geiger (UPIC: geiger) traveled to Washington, D.C., earlier this month to visit with Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar and their staff as well as staff from the offices of Sens. Kohl, Bennet, Collins and Snowe.

He's been to D.C. several times, says Hawes, but this trip was his first on behalf of PPAI and the industry. The visit was spurred on by an earlier, successful visit with Minnesota state legislators who set aside a bill that would have damaged promotional products business in that state.

"We wanted to be sure these [similar] issues were brought to the attention of national lawmakers," he says.

Newton Spreads Holiday Spirit Around Town
Employees of Newton, Iowa-based distributor Newton Manufacturing Co. (UPIC: NEWTON) embraced the holiday spirit by volunteering their time and collecting food, gifts, and money for several charitable organizations in the community.

Employees donated two grocery carts full of food to the Salvation Army Food Drive and gave an additional $285 in individual donations. They decorated the company Mitten Tree with hats, gloves and scarves to be donated to a children's charity and also organized several volunteers to ring bells outside local stores for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive.

Employees also sponsored 45 children and families as part of the St. Nick's Christmas Club Adopt an Angel program, which provides gifts through donations for children and families in need.

"Our employees truly care about their community," says Lee Cochran, Newton president. "I am very proud of their generosity in providing a little holiday cheer for those facing challenges this year."

Way To Be Founders' Story The Subject Of News Article
The story of Hayward, California-based distributor Way To Be Designs (UPIC: WAYTP001) and its founders, Wayne Beasley and Alan McIntosh, was featured in a column in the Silicon Valley Mercury News recently.

The two were accountants for McDonald's before opening a promotional products business; now they provide apparel for the fast-food giant. "At work, we're visionaries," says Alan McIntosh in the article. "But we still have to be dreamers. We still want to do things that go beyond the scope of this business, beyond these 27,000 square feet."

Healthy ROI
Brand has become a buzz word. Companies invest considerable time, money and resources to define and refine their brand. They hope to attain the rewards that name recognition and approval produce. However, when their primary focus is external, the results are frequently disappointing.

Found Money
Are you leaving money on the table when you walk out of a sales call? While you probably didn't literally leave a stack of George Washingtons in the conference room as a parting gift, you are essentially walking away from easy money if you don't talk to your clients about incentives.

Close Up: Robin Quinn
After climbing the ranks in human resources and operations management with companies such as Kraft and Pepsico-Frito Lay, Robin Quinn ran her own consulting company for 18 years before joining Norwood six years ago this month as senior vice president, human resources and customer relations.
