Lender's Bankruptcy Protects Clients But Sacrifices Bailout Funds
Ending negotiations that began this summer, small-business lender CIT Group agreed to a packaged bankruptcy on Sunday, a deal that will hand ownership of the company to CIT's creditors.

Peek, CIT's chairman and chief executive, in a written statement at the time of the announcement.

Though it's meant to keep the small businesses from being negatively affected, the filing also means the taxpayer-funded relief that CIT received from the government's TARP program in December 2008 is considered a loss.

PPAI Joins Request For CPSIA Implementation Review
PPAI joined other members of the National Association of Manufacturers Consumer Product Safety Commission (NAM CPSC) Coalition in calling for review of the implementation procedures for the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).

The letter, addressed to Sen. Mark Pryor, requests a hearing to address how the CPSIA rules will be implemented before the end of 2009, particularly to focus on CPSIA's "unintended consquences," which lead to confusion among consumers and economic damage to Coalition members.

Pryor is chairman of the Consumer Protection, Product Safety and Insurance Subcommittee.

"We urge you to allow other witnesses to testify at the hearing from the business community so that the committee obtains a full picture of the outstanding issues related to the law," the letter states.
