BIC, Norwood Form Joint Promotional Products Group
Clearwater, Florida-based supplier BIC Graphic USA (UPIC: BIC) and Indianapolis, Indiana-based supplier Norwood Promotional Products (UPIC: NORWOOD) announce the formation of BIC Advertising and Promotional Products group (BIC APP).

BIC Graphic and Norwood will continue to operate as two separate business units with BIC Graphic managed by Marc Rugi, its president, and Norwood managed by President Paul Lage, MAS.

"Our customers can expect the highest level of service, quality and safety with BIC APP," says Lage. "Although we are one company, we will continue to operate the brands separately as BIC Graphic and Norwood. Our programs and relationships may be different, but our vision and values are the same."

The Norwood and BIC Graphic sales forces will remain separate as well in order to provide the highest level of coverage across the industry. They continue to be managed by Joe DeVault and Dave Saracino, respectively.

BIC's recent acquisition of Norwood in the U.S. and Antalis Promotional Products in Europe, combined with BIC Graphic organizations around the globe, make BIC APP one of the largest promotional products companies in the world.

British Associations BPMA, Promota Join Forces
If their members ratify the decision next month, two British promotional products trade associations will soon become one. British Promotional Merchandise Association Ltd. (BPMA) and the Promotional Merchandise Trade Association (PROMOTA) have agreed to merge in the spring of 2010.

The new association is expected to carry more than 1,250 members. Its goal is to offer supplier and distributor members a strong platform to drive business and enhance the trade channel--supplier to distributor and distributor to end user, making it stronger and giving more clarity in the marketplace.

Donald O'Hara Leaves PPPC
Donald O'Hara has stepped down as CEO/president of Promotional Product Professionals of Canada (PPPC), the organization announced last week. No reason was given for his departure.

"Each staff member at PPPC head office will continue to work diligently to fulfill the mandates and daily activities required of them," says Lynda Gallant, CAS, association chair. "The board of directors is dedicated to the association, and each and every one will do their utmost to serve the members in the best way possible."

The Executive Search Committee will begin the selection process for filling the much-needed position, according to an association announcement, and plans to have a new CEO/president in place by the start of PPPC's National Convention in January 2010.

JH Specialty Expands Operations
Fort Wayne, Indiana-based distributor JH Specialty (UPIC: JHSPEC) announced it has begun expanding its operations through projects to be completed by March 2010. The expansion includes the creation of more than 30 jobs during the next five years.

"We believe this is a necessary time for expansion, as business continues to increase through our various operational platforms," says CEO John Henry III. "Being located in Fort Wayne has been very beneficial to our company, and we look forward to maintaining business here for years to come."

PPAI Joins Coalition Calling For Estate Tax Relief
PPAI members who have inherited their parents' companies or who plan to pass them down to their children have new action on their side. PPAI has joined the Permanent Estate Tax Relief Now Coalition, asking Congress to enact permanent estate tax relief.

The coalition is urging Congress to adopt a permanent individual exemption of $3.5 million (indexed for inflation) from the estate tax and a top marginal estate tax rate of 45 percent. Click here to read more.

S. 301 Webinar To Help Members Make Their Voices Heard In D.C.
On Thursday, October 1, PPAI representatives will help members uncover the most effective ways to reach legislators regarding S. 301, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act.

At noon CDT, webinar participants will hear from PPAI representatives about the legislation currently before the U.S. Senate, which calls for all manufacturers of covered drugs, devices or medical supplies to disclose payments (or any other "transfer of value") made to a physician, a physician medical practice or a physician group practice--including promotional products.

The Association believes that under such strict measures, companies will likely forego the use of promotional products rather than implement complicated recordkeeping measures. PPAI has provided several tools to members to help them voice their views to senators and representatives.

Register here for this free webinar. For more information, contact Anne Lardner, PPAI senior manager of public affairs, at AnneL@ppai.org.

Save The Date For Next Year's Women's Leadership Conference

PPAI Names 2010 Supplier Star Award Nominees

Latest Fraud Scheme Is A Reminder To Vet Potential Clients
Another e-mail fraud scheme is popping up in members' inboxes, and the rise in such schemes serves as a reminder to thoroughly check the veracity of the senders' requests.

One member received an inquiry from an African Aids Network (AAN) consultant who wanted a quote on t-shirts for an event. The request was forwarded from an acquaintance who is also an overseas importer.

The recipient says that while repeated follow-up e-mails gave detailed information about the potential client--the organization being representated is a legitimate one--in the end the scam revealed itself when the distributor was asked to send a bid fee.

Members are encouraged to thoroughly research potential clients, especially when they send unsolicited e-mails.

Company Leaders: Cast Your Vote For PPAI Board Nominees
Just three days remain for distributor and supplier principals to cast a vote in the 2009 PPAI Board Of Directors Elections.

Online voting runs through Thursday, October 1, and election ballots must be completed by then. Texas members must vote using paper ballots, which have been mailed. For nominee biographies and more election information, click here. For questions, contact Lisa Beck at 972-258-3069 or LisaB@ppai.org.

PPAI Research Reveals Lasting Impact Of Promotional Products
The Association's latest study regarding the effectiveness of promotional products shows once again that the advertising medium continues to make a lasting impact on promotional products recipients.

The study finds nearly half of Americans surveyed (44 percent) recalled receiving a promotional product in the past 24 months. Of those 44 percent, 83 percent said they liked receiving products with an advertising message. Additionally, 67 percent said they keep the products they like, and 36 percent pass along products they don't use.

The PPAI study reveals more positive data regarding which products help keep a client's name top-of-mind and how long end users keep the products they receive.

Full results of the study, including Power Tools to use, will be made available for download in November at www.ppai.org.

PPAI Staff Comes Together To Help One Of Its Own
Staff members at PPAI headquarters in Irving, Texas, recently collected funds to help a co-worker in need. The staff member has taken several weeks of unpaid leave to care for a hospitalized child, so the team hosted a fundraising luncheon to raise money to cover day-to-day expenses.

Nearly everyone on staff attended the luncheon, along with employees of PPAI subsidiary ISERVCORP, and those who were unable to attend still contributed. The luncheon garnered roughly $1,500 in donations and more was given directly to the recipient. Additional money has been raised through a garage sale with items donated by employees.

NWPMA President Reflects
On Successful Fall Showcase

The success of Northwest Promotional Marketing Association's (NWPMA) Fall Showcase, held September 10-11, is being attributed to collaboration between regional leaders and PPAI staff.

NWPMA President Lori Dollar, CAS, says the goals for the show to create productive networking opportunities that would enhance members' professionalism and individual success, and working together with regional members and Association staff, helped facilitate the desired result.

The show's production came in the midst of structural changes to regional association leadership. In the months leading up to the show, NWPMA departed from its longtime association management firm, Melby, Cameron & Anderson, while also experiencing changes within the board.

what would you do?

A distributor asks: "We've had an order for four months that we can't get out of the door because the end user keeps hesitating and changing its mind about what imprint it wants. What can I do to move them along? I'm thinking of charging a fee just for my time. Would this move them along or scare them away?"

What's your answer? E-mail answers along with your name, title and company name to Question@ppai.org by September 30 for possible inclusion in the December issue of PPB magazine.

Answers to this month's question are in. Click here to read advice for a supplier concerned about its negative customer reviews on an industry website.
