Twitter Opens The Door
For Advertising

Barely four months after one of Twitter's co-founders announced they would not sell ad space on the website, Biz Stone is now tweeting a different tune: Twitter's amended terms of service open up the possibility of selling ad space.

On the company's website, Stone emphasizes that those terms are in flux and do not solidify the type or frequency of advertising that would be allowed.

Many member companies take advantage of the quick-update style to share their business moves. But will they be among the first companies to post standard web advertising, as well?

Click here to read how one member views the change.

PPAI has developed its own presence on Twitter. Updates are posted by the Association's Business Media, Expo, Human Resources and Professional Development departments, as well as news on legislative action.

Sales Promotions Thrive Even When The Economy Doesn't
Even though sales for many promotional products have taken a hit from the sluggish economy, sales incentive programs and contests continue to motivate individuals to do their best and, of course, boost their employers' bottom lines.

Jeff Burnett, sales and marketing vice president for Newton, Iowa-based distributor The Vernon Company (UPIC: Vernon) says under normal economic conditions, the "ups and downs" of the company's bottom line were not a big factor in the value of the incentives they offered. This year's annual prize was a trip to Big Sky, Montana.

"Like many companies, we have some longstanding incentive programs that people have come to count on," says Burnett. "Because these incentives have been around for a long time we also know how to budget them."

Grand Island, New York-based supplier Starline USA, Inc. (UPIC: STAR0009) uses promotions to help foster better use and understanding of its sales tools.

"During this recession, Starline looks to provide sales incentives designed to reward account or account activity growth," says Dan Norris, Starline president.

Lardner, Tackaberry Discuss S. 301 Issues With Regional Members
Anne Lardner, PPAI senior manager for public affairs, and Hope Tackaberry, PPAI senior manager of regional relations, visited with members of Promotional Products Association Southwest (PPAS) to discuss the S. 301 legislative campaign.

Lardner helped members develop strategies for effectively communicating their views with their senators about the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which is currently before U.S. Congress. Tackaberry also encouraged regionals to become more active in volunteer efforts.

Lardner says one question she received during the visit was: "I send lots of e-mails [to my senators], but I only get form letters in return. What should I do next?"

For this challenge, she suggests members try "something different. Keep sending those e-mails, but start making phone calls to the D.C. office. If you can't get through to the D.C. office, call a local office. A script and phone numbers are available for all 50 states at www.ppailaw.org.

"We need to reach a critical tipping point," says Lardner. "For every call you make, please ask six industry peers to do the same. Together, we can make change happen."

Slagle Takes S. 301 Campaign To Washington
Steve Slagle, CAE, PPAI president and CEO, traveled to Washington, D.C., last Thursday to take the Association's industry concerns straight to Capitol Hill.

After a brief strategy session with PPAI General Counsel John Satagaj and PPAI lobbyist Robert Drummer, Slagle and Drummer met with Stephanie Carlton, healthcare aide to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, to express PPAI's opposition to S. 301, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act. Sen. Cornyn, as a member of the Senate Finance Committee, is responsible for this issue on a national level.

"We had the opportunity to address the threat S. 301 poses to our industry and explain that the bill, if passed in its current form, would effectively prohibit the distribution of promotional products to healthcare professionals," says Slagle. "The reality is that if every item must be reported, many companies will choose to give nothing of value rather than report on each item."

PPAI has supported the charity in various ways since 2007 including product harvesting following The PPAI Expo.
