MAPPS Show Draws
A Satisfied Crowd To North Texas
An impressive—and impressed—crowd turned out Monday for the Metroplex Area Promotional Products Show (MAPPS) sponsored by Carrollton, Texas-based business services provider SAGE|Quick Technologies, Inc. (UPIC: SAGE).

"What makes our show so great is that we take care of the exhibitors and the attendees, giving them a personal touch which most shows have lost," says David Natinsky, SAGE president. "Since we exhibit at more than 90 shows a year, we know what it is like to exhibit and we have taken what we like and dislike and incorporated it into a package at MAPPS that everyone loves."

The 19th annual MAPPS, held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Conference Center in Grapevine, Texas, overcame a sluggish economy with pleasing numbers and positive feedback from attendees and exhibitors alike.

QCA Founding Members Achieve Accreditation
Just weeks after Chicago, Illinois-based nonprofit Quality Certification Alliance (QCA) opened for membership, two of its founding members have achieved QCA accreditation. Woodinville, Washington-based distributor Bensussen, Deutsch & Associates, Inc. (UPIC: BENS0002) also achieved accreditation during this time frame.

Tustin, California-based supplier Logomark, Inc. (UPIC: LOGOMARK) and Lawrence, Massachusetts-based supplier Gemline (UPIC: GEMLINE) began the process by first endorsing self-certification, then proceeding to a self-assessment step. This was followed by a third-party audit and a resulting scorecard, which the QCA board uses as the foundation for granting accreditation.

"This has been a humbling experience. Even though Logomark is renowned for quality, going through the rigorous accreditation process has allowed us to vastly improve what we deliver," says Trevor Gnesin, president of Logomark.

"Compliance is one of the cornerstones of Gemline's philosophy," says Jonathan Isaacson, CEO of Lawrence, Massachusetts-based Gemline. "I am proud of this important achievement, and it's a positive step for our industry."

PPAI Tracking Label Database Goes Live This Week
On Friday, August 14, the tracking label requirement issued under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) goes into effect, and PPAI will be ready to provide its members with an invaluable resource when its free tracking label database goes live on the same day.

The database will allow suppliers to store information required for tracking labels, which are needed for products intended for children ages 12 and younger. Suppliers can then print a label number and a simple URL on products that points to the information stored. Use of the database only requires a UPIC, which can be obtained for free at www.upic.org.

On Friday, suppliers can click here to register tracking labels one at a time, or here to register labels in bulk with Microsoft Excel. End users can also search for tracking labels through the database.

Also beginning August 14, allowable lead limits in children's products will be reduced. Products intended for children ages 12 and younger may not contain more than 300 ppm of lead, and lead in paint must be reduced to 90 ppm. Third-party testing and certification is also required for products that will be manufactured after this date.

For more information on the database, tracking labels and other requirements under CPSIA, visit PPAI's Product Safety page or contact Anne Lardner, PPAI senior manager of public affairs.

S. 301 Needs Your Prompt Attention
Congress may be in recess, but the Physician Payments Sunshine Act (S. 301) still contains language that could have a serious impact on promotional products business.

In its current form, S. 301 requires all manufacturers of covered drugs, devices or medical supplies to disclose payments (or any other "transfer of value") made to a physician, a physician medical practice or a physician group practice--promotional products are included under this definition.

This requirement could effectively end the distribution of promotional products.

PPAI is asking members to give their legislators something to see and hear when they return to the nation's capital by delivering letters, e-mails and phone calls to their offices.

Vist www.senate.gov and www.house.gov for contact information for your respective legislators, and stay up to date on PPAI's efforts regarding legislation by visiting www.ppailaw.org.

Revamped SAAC Show
Earns Positive Feedback
The Specialty Advertising Association of California (SAAC) unveiled an updated show to enthusiastic exhibitors and attendees in Long Beach last week. "This year we had the rare opportunity to reinvent and rebrand the show from the ground up, with PPAI's assistance" says Rick Green, MAS, president of SAAC and regional vice president for Sterling, Ilinois-based distributor HALO/Lee Wayne (UPIC: LEEWAYNE). "PPAI was a tremendous help, and people were blown away by the new look and layout. The first day was fantastic."

The show's new entrance proved a worthy prop for this year's theme: "It's Show Time!" Green says walking down a red carpet set the mood for the two-day event. "A red carpet just looks different. We wanted attendees to know it was the same warm and friendly event, with some new twists."

Greg Armstrong, a SAAC director and regional sales manager for Neenah, Wisconsin-based distributor Adventures In Advertising (UPIC: ADVINADV), said the minor tweaks to the show's appearance and the introduction of new technological elements were well received.

"We offered a widget that allowed people to download education PowerPoint presentations, and we had an interview booth where you could record a 30-second infomercial," says Armstrong. "We're putting those clips online in the next few weeks."

Armstrong spent time talking with suppliers both as a SAAC representative and as a distributor attendee. For the latter purpose, says Armstrong, the show was fruitful. He says he was able to make new connections and build on current relationships.
