VISSTUN® Receives High Scores In Product Safety Audit
Las Vegas, Nevada-based supplier Visstun® (UPIC: VISSTUN) recently underwent Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) as well as Packaging Quality Systems and Product Safety Inspection (food safety) testing of its drinkware products and manufacturing facility. The results were scores of 965 out of 1,000 (900 and higher is considered excellent) and 98.72 out of 100 (95 and higher is rated excellent) on the respective evaluations.

These third-party audits were conducted by ASI Food Safety Consultants, a provider of food safety and good manufacturing practices audits, seminars, international auditing programs and HACCP design and validation. To maintain certification in both areas, Visstun must recertify every year.

"With the number of product recalls increasing in recent years, product safety is of prime concern for us and our customers," says Ed Hamilton, Visstun president. "As a domestic manufacturer of drink cups and containers for large food and beverage clients, we control all aspects of the production process and can document our safety protocols to satisfy the product safety requirements of all our distributors' customers."

PPAI Staff, Board Stepping Up
Member Outreach

In recent weeks, PPAI staff members have been traveling across the country to visit with members, sharing news from the Association and discussing issues affecting the industry's current and future state in economic and government arenas.

The face-to-face meetings, encouraged by the Association's Board of Directors, hopefully will spur more conversations about topics such as legislation that could affect the sale of promotional products, the effects of the economic climate on the industry as a whole and benefits provided by the Association to help them grow their businesses.

"Members are talking about the economy and about their need for more research, to be able to talk to their clients about the value of promotional products," says Paul Bellantone, CAE, PPAI executive vice president. The visits also generated discussions regarding buyer outreach and government relations, he says.

Among the recent visits:
- Geiger Galleria in Phoenix, Arizona. Bellantone administered MAS and CAS exams to attendees.

- Adventures In Advertising's 14th Annual Sales Convention and tradeshow in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. PPAI President and CEO Steve Slagle, CAE, spoke to members, and Bellantone and PPAI Business Development Manager Blake Bozeman manned the Association's booth.

- Distributor Spartan Promotional Group (UPIC: SPARP005) in Tempe, Arizona. Bellantone and board members Bruce Perryman, MAS, and Karie Ann Cowden, MAS, discussed the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, S. 301, and sent letters to legislators opposing the bill.

- Distributor HALO/Lee Wayne (UPIC: LEEWAYNE) in Sterling, Illinois. Bozeman and Bellantone discussed PPAI's new member benefits kit and member statement.

PPAI Tackles Product Tracking Labels With Webinar, Database
Beginning August 14, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) will require tracking labels for products intended for children ages 12 and younger. Learn more about this requirement and how to stay in compliance with PPAI's next webinar on tracking labels.

At 1 pm CDT on August 10, Susan DeRagon, associate director for toys and premiums with Specialized Technology Resources (STR), will offer guidance on best practices in tracking labels. The end of the half-hour webinar includes time for questions.

Be sure to register early--this important topic could have a profound impact on promotional products businesses and their bottom lines.

Additionally, PPAI is launching a tracking labels database that will allow companies to store information about their products in one place. Learn more about the database here.

Government Relations Council Tackles Legislation Head-On
PPAI's newly formed Government Relations Action Council (GRAC) has jumped into action, assisting the efforts of PPAI lobbyists, the regional association legislative committees and staff in influencing legislation and regulations affecting the promotional products industry.

Currently, the council is focused on legislation before both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate that would require all manufacturers of covered drugs, devices or medical supplies to disclose payments (or any other "transfer of value") made to a physician, a physician medical practice or a physician group practice--including promotional products.

"It is vitally important that everyone in the industry take action now," says Eric Ekstrand, MAS, GRAC member and senior vice president of Chagrin Falls, Ohio-based distributor The Mort C. McClennan Co. (UPIC: MCMCC). "It is critical that your senators and representatives know that these bills, as written, will profoundly harm the promotional products industry. Once you take action, please encourage others to do so as well."
