Florida Governor Visits BIC Facility, Discusses Legislation
Clearwater, Florida-based supplier BIC Graphic USA (UPIC: BIC) hosted Florida Gov. Charlie Crist on July 14 to help provide the governor with a better understanding of the promotional products industry.

During his visit, Crist toured the supplier's facility, and he and BIC representatives discussed current legislation that could threaten the livelihood of the promotional products industry. This legislation defines these items as gifts rather than effective, low-cost advertising vehicles.

"Our goal was to educate the governor about our industry and give him a first-hand look at promotional products and their value as a valuable marketing tool," says Lori Bauer, trade marketing manager for BIC Graphic North America.

Governor Crist also hosted a roundtable discussion with BIC and other local business leaders to discuss current economic conditions and what he could do to support growth.

"During the meeting, BIC managers highlighted the issues surrounding potential bans of promotional products across the country as well as keeping jobs in Florida," notes David Saracino, director of sales for BIC Graphic North America. "Promotional products revenue in the state of Florida alone represents more than $500 million."

Jetline Reviewing Current Facility Capabilities, May Cut Jobs
Mount Vernon, New York-based supplier Jetline LLC (UPIC: JETLINE) is in the process of examining additional plant locations to address increased capacity requirements as a result of "double-digit annual growth," according to a news release sent today.

"Our current location does not allow for the scalability needed to address the current and future needs of Jetline and our growing customer base," says company President Eric Levin. "Our business has done exceedingly well in an extremely tough environment--it's essential that we make
this critical investment so that we can continue to provide world-class service to every one of our customers."

Several locations are under consideration and the company expects to make a formal announcement regarding the new facilities in the near future. While it is
expected that staffing levels at the current Mount Vernon location will decrease substantially, overall staffing at Jetline is expected to increase as part of the expansion of operations.

A report by a local paper, The Journal News, said Jetline would close its printing facility in the fall, a move that will eliminate 81 jobs. Jetline did not provide comments for that story.

PPAI Sponsors Preferred Buyer Program At 2009 Motivation Show
PPAI has partnered with the 2009 Motivation Show, scheduled for September 28-October 1 in Chicago, Illinois, to offer the Preferred Buyer Program to distributors.

The program is an exclusive opportunity for qualified promotional products distributors who provide recognition awards, logoed incentives, gift cards and business gifts. In exchange for meeting with key suppliers, eligible distributors receive multiple benefits, including complimentary hotel stays, exhibit hall registration and full-conference registration.

"We at PPAI believe the Motivation Show is an important event for the overall promotional industry, enough so that we continue to exhibit at it and help promote it," says Steve Slagle, CAE, PPAI president and CEO.

"It's the largest single gathering for the branded products companies to meet along with the incentive travel organizations and destinations, and it attracts a variety of resellers like distributors, meeting planners, incentive reps and corporate buyers representing marketing, human resources, sales and executives. For serious promotional consultants it's a great show to attend to see the providers of just about any type of merchandise or merchandise equivalent and travel used for employee engagement, motivation and marketing."

Preferred Buyer applications are due by July 30. Qualified applicants who do not receive Preferred Buyer status will still receive complimentary Exhibit Hall registration, a $20 to $40 value, and a 50-percent discount on the Full-Conference registration, a $145 value.

PPAI Introduces Tracking Label Database During Webinar
In a webinar last Friday that addressed the tracking label requirements set forth by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), PPAI introduced a tracking labels database for members.

Beginning August 10, the tracking label database will be ready to house the basic information required for tracking labels, which manufacturers and importers of children's products must have starting August 14. Labels must contain such information as the source of the product, manufacturing date and sometimes batch or run number.

This tool will be available free of charge to UPIC subscribers. It will consist of a search page for end users, a data entry page for suppliers, an administration page in UPIC for suppliers to manage all uploaded product information and a back-end SQL database to house the data.

And, rather than printing the information on a product, suppliers can instead print a URL address that points to the information in the database. This option may prove beneficial for supplier of products with small imprintable areas, such as writing instruments.

"We encourage all supplier companies to contribute data even if they've developed their own tracking process," says Anne Lardner, PPAI senior manager of public affairs.

Lardner adds that there are advantages to having a central database for this particular initiative, including saving time and money on the supplier side and the serving as a single information source that can be published for end users.

"This was one of the most informative I have attended and as a supplier I appreciate the steps PPAI has taken to enable an online facility for our use. It is truly a great association value," says Heather Garner of Foamworx.

A tracking labels tutorial will be posted on the PPAI website and its availability announced soon, and two more webinars on the subject will be held prior to August 14. Click here for a recap of Friday's webinar.

Industry Legend Max Scharf Dies After Battle With Cancer
Max Scharf, CAS, who is credited with introducing imprinted apparel, or 'wearables,' to the promotional products industry, died Monday after battling cancer.

Scharf served as a U.S. Army corporal and graduated from Washington University's School of Fine Art and the Harvard Graduate School of Business before starting work in promotional products nearly 60 years ago.

He entered the industry as a distributor in partnership with his sister at Thelmax Co., and served as art director and sales promotion manager of Vitronic before becoming CEO and president of St. Louis, Missouri-based K-Studios. Scharf grew K-Studios/Incentives Corp. to an $18 million company with more than 300 employees.

Former K-Studios partner Harry Rosenberg, now a consultant with St. Louis, Missouri-based Ariel Premium Supply, Inc. (UPIC: ARIEL), says Scharf's lasting legacy as a wearables pioneer is just one of the qualities that make him a legend among peers.

Scharf displayed his commitment to the industry through his service on PPAI committees and as an instructor on behalf of the promotional products sector. He was chairman of the Premium Education and Education Committees and was a member of the Long Range Planning and Centennial Committees. He has also spoken both formally and informally at tradeshows and meetings throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Scharf also spent a great deal of time working on another passion--art. "He was an impressionist," notes Rosenberg. "A number of people in the industry used his artwork on their products." Additionally, works by Scharf are on display throughout the country.

Scharf is survived by his wife, Esther; sons, Hal Scharf and David (Ingrid) Scharf; granddaughter, Caitlin Scharf; sister Thelma (Carl) Stone; sister and brother-in-law, Sandy Kaplan and Alan (Peggy) Ziglin; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm CDT Wednesday at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery, 9125 Ladue Road, Ladue, Missouri 63124.

The family asks that contributions be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be sent to 10358 Chimney Rock Drive, St. Louis, Missouri 63146.
